The Sino-Humanitas Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series, organized by the The Mr. Simon Suen and Mrs. Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute, has been held for over ten years. The series has invited more than twenty distinguished scholars in Chinese humanities from both within the region and abroad to deliver lectures at Hong Kong Baptist University. This time, we are honoured to invite cultural historian Professor Pei-kai Cheng to present a lecture themed “The Historical Development of Aesthetics in the Tea Ceremony.” Event details are as follows.

耶魯大學歷史學博士。著名歷史文化學者。原香港非物質文化遺產諮詢委員會主席,團結香港基金中華學社創社社長,香港城市大學中國文化中心創始主任、教授。現任中國民間文藝家協會香港分會主席,團結香港基金學術顧問,香港集古學社社長、北師香港浸會大學傑出客座教授、臺灣逢甲大學特約講座教授、浙江大學客座教授。著作所涉學術範圍甚廣,以文化意識史、文化審美及文化變遷與交流為主。尤其在昆曲、茶文化研究方面有極高的建樹。著作、編著逾百種。鄭教授書法與學養相得益彰,為文化界、學界、藝術界人士及社會公眾所喜愛。近年受邀舉辦個人書法展與聯展數十次。2016年獲頒香港政府榮譽勛章。2023年被選入福布斯中國傑出匠人TOP 100。
Abstract (in Chinese only):
人類最早發現飲茶有解乏的藥用價值,是在中國,而且可以上溯到史前的新石器時代,已有考古實物為據。唐朝陸羽寫《茶經》,不但詳述種茶、採茶、製茶、飲茶的方法與歷史,還創製了二十四種茶器與茶飲的儀式,把物質性的感官體驗提升到精神性的審美及文化修養層次,開創了飲茶有道的格局。唐宋飲茶方式,從研末煎煮到擊拂拉花,在品茶過程的儀式中,開啟了茶飲的文化傳承。宋朝以來更發明擊拂拉花的點茶與鬥茶,講究末茶呈現沫餑之美,成為文人雅士生活美學的重要組成部分,影響遍及社會各個階層,同時傳佈到韓國與日本。明太祖廢除茶餅的製作,改變了中國人的飲茶方式,以芽葉沖泡為主流,文人雅士則持續追求茶飲的審美境界。清代更發展出茶葉發酵的工藝,進而製作發酵的茶葉,出現了烏龍岩茶系列以及紅茶、黑茶等品類,不但使得茶飲多元,並傳佈世界各地,豐富了人類的飲食生活。
