自二十世紀末以來,人文與社會科學領域興起了一場被稱為「物質轉向」(material turn)的重要學術思潮。它重新發現並強調物在社會生活和歷史進程中所起的重要作用,而不再將其僅僅視為思想、文化意義或社會結構的被動反映。本講座以「物的社會生命」(the social life of things)的理論框架為基礎,將玉石從「藝術品」的標籤中還原出來,將其作為一種兼具自然屬性和人文屬性的礦物,追踪它在十八世紀從開採,製作到消費的生命歷程。通過重點討論玉石製作技術以及琢玉過程中不可或缺的解玉砂的生產、流通與使用,本研究試圖闡釋物,物質性與清代資源調配和管理的內在關係。
