史丹福大學艾朗諾教授2024年3月12日上午蒞臨我校，為本校副研究員及碩博士研究生們展開了題為「Trends in Pre-modern Chinese Studies in North America」的座談會。艾朗諾教授選擇了美國學術界的五本著作為討論對象，以此展開當天的論題。
第一本著作是 Christopher Nugent（倪健）的 Written on Manifest in Words, Written on Paper: Producing and Circulating Poetry in Tang Dynasty China（中文版譯名為《有詩自唐來：唐代詩歌及其有形世界》）。艾朗諾教授指出Nugent在著作中質疑了文本的確定性，唐代文本的生產、流通環境決定了文本的不穩定因素，眾多原因參與了詩歌文本的再創造。作為讀者，我們應該放棄「只有一個文本的想法」，不執著於尋找最符合作者原意的文本，因為文本總是不斷變化與流動的。他還將將陳尚君致力於考證、重建唐詩可靠文本的著作《唐詩求是》作為比較。
第二本著作是 Patricia Buckley Ebrey（伊沛霞）的 Emperor Huizong（中文版譯名為《宋徽宗：天下一人》）。艾朗諾教授指出伊沛霞打破了中國傳統史學家對宋徽宗的刻板印象——腐敗、統治無能的亡國之君。這本著作讓我們暫停思考歷史上對宋徽宗的指責及道德相關的說教，而更關注其人在文學藝術和宗教領域的作為與貢獻，這打破了中國傳統史學研究範式裡階級化、道德化的二元傾向。
第三本著作是 Hsiao-wen Cheng 的Divine, Demonic, and Disordered: Women without Men in Song Dynasty China。艾朗諾教授指出Hsiao-wen Cheng的這本著作講述了宋代社會裡那些傳統家庭之外的女性的故事，如未婚婦女、不與丈夫發生關係的婦女、離異或喪偶的婦女和女道士、女尼姑等。Hsiao-wen Cheng意圖探討當時社會對這些女人的描述與態度，並引入了宗教研究的視角。她的創新研究爲對女性、性別、醫學和宗教感興趣的讀者提供了一個新的視角，以此重審父權制時代下女性的行爲和生活所具有的不穩定意義。
第四本著作是 Wai-yee Li（李惠儀）的Plum Shadows and Plank Bridge: Two Memoirs About Courtesans。艾朗諾教授說明了李惠儀收錄並翻譯冒襄（1611-93）《影梅庵憶語》和余懷（1616-96）《板橋雜記》的原因，希望讓英語學界的讀者了解女性是如何被男性書寫，並提供了一個批判性的視角。明末清初的文人把名妓的形象理想化，以此寄托對晚明的懷念，其中蘊含女性與知識分子、文學與政治間的張力，李惠儀卻提醒我們，真相並非如兩位男性作家所書寫的那麼美好，不免引人深思。
第五本著作是 Petya Andreeva 的 Fantastic Fauna from China to Crimea: Image-Making in Eurasian Nomadic Societies, 700 BCE-500 CE。艾朗諾教授指出這是一本極其不同尋常的著作。Petya Andreeva是一位年輕的藝術史學家，她關注並向大家展示的是有關中亞的歷史。與眾不同的是，Petya Andreeva跳出了中國中心主義的視角，而將眼光放寬到朝鮮、日本、西伯利亞、哈薩克斯坦等多個區域及相關是語言、文獻，展現出更宏大的視角。此外，動物圖像研究的引入也是令人耳目一新的嘗試。
如艾朗諾教授所言，這五本著作都是質疑、挑戰傳統中國研究範式的嘗試，展現出北美漢學研究別具一格的視角。當然，不同未必代表著正確，艾朗諾教授也提點我們，應該在研究視角上做到兼收並蓄，如此方能找到獨屬自己的研究風格。
